Northside Primary School

Welcome to Northside Primary School

Week 1 Summer 1

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome back, I hope that you had a restful break and are ready for (fingers crossed!) a whole term in school!

We have had a fun packed week already. On Monday, all the staff took part in training about supporting the learning of children with English as an Additional Language (EAL) and we will put actions in place this term to improve our provision even further. In addition the teacher’s Book Club this term is a ‘The EAL Teaching Book’.  So hopefully we will get some good tips from this as well. As parents of children with EAL please feel free to make any suggestions of how to support your children at the next Parent Forum meeting on the 22nd of June—which hopefully will be in person!

Thursday was Earth Day and the children took part in many activities including making pledges to make one small change to improve our environment. This ticked a box on the Eco Ambassadors action plan for achieving our Eco Schools Award and Green Flag. Thank you to Mrs. Ng that organised the activities with the Eco Ambassadors support. A great day was had by all.

Today is St George’s Day and each class has learnt a bit about St George today and his values which that he showed which made him the patron saint of England. This half term’s value is CREATIVITY and this week’s focus has been on using imagination, being original and developing new skills. I have certainly seen a lot of that on my visits to classrooms. Particularly Cardiff University who today have launched their Egyptian topic with the ‘Brilliant Beginning’ of dressing like an Egyptian—we have many pharaohs in school today and I have to say Ms. Greenhill made a fantastic Cleopatra. Pictures are later on the in newsletter.

Another exciting venture at Northside is our 2 year old Nursery, King’s College University, that will be opening in September. Many of the resources that Mrs. Mulvihill-Ellis and I ordered in the Spring term have started to arrive and we are in the process of setting it up. We hope to have open days soon so you will be able to come and have a look. Application forms can be found on our website

Other resources that arrived today were some more reading books for Years 3 to 5 that we managed to buy with the money that you raised for us! So thank you very much.  The staff continue to dress down on Friday’s and make a donation towards books for the children and last term we raised £176 which will go towards yet more books.

I am sure you join me in welcoming Mrs. Castang to the Northside community; she joined us this week in the office and has hit the floor running already!

Happy St George’s Day and I hope the holy month of Ramadan has started well for our Muslim families. Have a lovely weekend.

Take care and stay safe.
Mrs. Longworth
