In Year 1 there is a statutory phonics screening test for all children. This is to ensure that all children can phonic decode to age appropriate standard. The test contains words that are real and words which are not real (Alien/Nonsense words). Below is an example of a past test for you to see. You an also go through these words at home with your child.
Things you can do at home to help your child
When reading books at home with your child encourage them to sound out words which are unfamiliar to them. Encourage children to identify any digraphs (two letters that make one sounds), trigraphs (three letters that make one sound) and split digraphs ( u_e).
Play Buried Treasure on the phonics play website sorting real and not nonsense words.
There are also some real and nonsense words below which you can practise reading with your child at home.
Little Wandle
