Intent

At Northside Primary Relationship, Social, Health Education (RSHE) enables all our children to become healthy, independent and responsible members within our community and society. Its aims to help our children understand how they are developing personally and socially, and equips them with the skills of the moral, social and cultural issues that are a part of growing up. We aim to provide our children with opportunities for them to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse Northside and British society.  Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to school life and the wider community.

Even though the Northside children are very individual coming from many different cultures and backgrounds, speaking over 40 different languages, the culture of joint ownership from all stakeholders creates a happy community. Differences are celebrated and used to build a strong school cultural links, behaviour is a strength of the school and Northside children are Happy to Learn and Inspired to Flourish.  

Implementation
At Northside we deliver the RSHE curriculum by utilising first hand fun, memorable experiences and sharing good practice and it is every staff member’s responsibility to do this by being a role model and having high expectations of Northside children.

The delivered curriculum reflects the needs of our children and is tailored to meet specific needs through the use of differentiation in planning and SEND support plans. We expect teachers to use the RSHE programmes to equip our children with a sound understanding of risk and with the knowledge and skills necessary to make safe and informed decisions. All staff will further develop the children’s knowledge of local, national, global and current events/issues.

The curriculum is split into three core themes of: Relationships, Living in the Wider World and Health and Wellbeing. The children will meet these themes throughout the course of the year and the skills and knowledge are built upon as children move through school. Throughout the programme of study the children should have a good balance of these overarching concepts:

Identity, Career/money, Relationships, A healthy balanced life style, Identification of risk and safety, Diversity and equality, Rights, responsibilities and consent, Change and resilience and Power

In EYFS: 

The provision is planned to ensure development in Physical, Social and Emotional Development (PSED), which occurs daily. In provision, children will explore the ideas of relationships, feelings and appropriate behaviours, self-confidence and self-awareness, rules and routines, empathy and restorative justice.

In KS1 and KS2: 

We use the statutory framework, as well as a continued focus on British Values, Northside Values and content linked to rights respecting schools are intertwined and taught in each half term. Topics/themes included in the programme of study are: Respecting Ourselves and others, Families and Friendships, Safe Relationships, Media Literacy and Digital Resilience, Belonging to a community, Money and Work, Keeping Safe, Physical Health and Mental Wellbeing and lastly, Growing and Changing.

All pupils will have weekly RSHE lessons. Medium term planning is given to all staff which has been developed by the RSHE lead in guidance with the government’s statuary framework. All year groups access 3 ‘Educate and Celebrate’ books to teach LGBT+, disability and diversity issues to promote equal opportunities at an age appropriate level. Themed assemblies are timetabled each week to ensure a wide coverage of the Northside and British Values along with Rights of a Child and celebrating awareness days and special events.

Impact
We firmly believe that a meaningful RSHE curriculum is the key to the children becoming confident, tolerant and well-round young adults who will be able to contribute positively to the community in which they live. Northside children will be able to approach a real life situation and apply their skills and attributes to help them navigate themselves through modern life. From exposure to a range of global issues and problems, children will build up independence, tolerance and a sense of responsibility of being a global citizen. Through engagement with a variety of ‘Educate and Celebrate’ texts, children can understand different lifestyles that people may live and be respectful and tolerant towards those leading different lives to themselves. This will be assessed through day to day monitoring. Children will leave Northside as respectful, inclusive, creative members of their community who are proud of their achievements and resilient to challenge.
